COMMUNITY OUTREACH & SMALL GROUPS

MUSTARD SEED MINISTRY

The Mustard Seed Street Ministry is a non-profit Christian humanitarian organization that has been providing services for the homeless, street people of Calgary since 1984. It began by offering meals and a place of spiritual worship and comfort and has grown to provide a range of food, clothing, and shelter needs, along with education and employment services. The Mustard Seed strives to provide care, restore hope, and transform lives through its programs and services.

Below are an assortment of PDF documents which outline various volunteer service opportunities:

SMALL FELLOWSHIP GROUPS

Small Fellowship Groups have been a part of Living Grace Fellowship since the early 1990s. After having gone through many configurations – i.e. men’s groups, women’s groups, senior’s groups, etc., we arrived at the place where the three groups which are functional today emerged.

NORTH CALGARY GROUP
This group is facilitated by Ed Kitt 403.274.8272. The group meets at Ed & Sharon's residence from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. The group normally breaks from July till after the Thanksgiving holiday.

DATES FOR 2010 MEETINGS:

May 25, Jun 08 & 22

For the current year, members are not focussed on any one subject but rather all group members are encouraged to take turns facilitating a meeting. This lends itself to topics with which the facilitators are most comfortable. Most often, topics are of a practical nature, allowing members to express their own experiences and also to implement relevant ideas into their own lives.

The evenings generally have 3 parts: after opening with a round of prayer, there is a welcome & update from all members (30 minutes); discussion of main topic (30 – 45 minutes); intercessory prayer (10 – 20 minutes). All members are encouraged to participate freely in the prayer & discussion times. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

SOUTH CALGARY GROUP
This group is facilitated by Andrew Lukacik 403.281.2158. We usually rotate the meeting location among the members but they have been hosted by Maria Ferrara 403.282.9156 for the past year or so.

DATES FOR 2010 MEETINGS:

May 22, Jun 12 & 26

The group is currently studying “Community Life 101” by Randall Neighbour, a U.S. pastor specializing in College Ministry. This small book contains a wealth of information on achieving your Christian potential - ‘How to be ready always to give an answer for the hope that lies within you.‘  The group allows each member to facilitate an evening session to prepare as a potential group leader and to practise personal evangelism. The lessons are engaging, informative, humourous, with props and hands-on activities. A typical evening consists of prayer, praise and worship, the lesson which includes discussion triggered by the material, a snack break and individual update for the past two weeks. During the update, each member recounts the highlights of their past two weeks and requests prayers for any concerns they may have. Frequently the prayers are offered up at that time.  Currently we have a committed group of 11 people. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
